2. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
- PHEVs have both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (typically gasoline), providing the flexibility to operate in electric-only mode or hybrid mode.
- They can be recharged by plugging into an electric power source, allowing them to travel a certain distance on electric power alone.
- Once the electric range is exhausted, they switch to gasoline power.
- Examples of PHEVs include the Toyota Prius Prime, Chevrolet Volt (discontinued), and Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid.
3. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
HEVs have both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, but they cannot be recharged by plugging in. Instead, they rely on regenerative braking to charge a smaller battery.
HEVs use the electric motor to assist the gasoline engine and improve fuel efficiency, but they don’t operate solely on electric power.
Examples of HEVs include the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.
